Czech Food Night

Some of our students who come to their first lesson of Czech already know some basic phrases. Mostly we hear “pivo”, “jedno pivo, prosím”, sometimes “dvě piva” or “dvakrát pivo.” To broaden awareness of Czech meals and eating, we decided to organise another Czech Night. This time the topic was “Czech food. From svíčková to bábovka Svíčková (beef sirloin in cream sauce with dumplings), švestkové knedlíky (sweet plum dumplings), bábovka (bunt cake), bramborový salát (potato salad), vepřo-knedlo-zelo (roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut), bramborák (potato pancake), šunkový chlebíček (open-faced sandwich) and smažený sýr (fried cheese) – all these meals were known by the majority of those who attended our Czech Food Night. We (non-cooks) hadn’t cooked or baked anything on purpose and instead we had prepared a game, which revealed some secrets of Czech cuisine. After the start of Czech Night and the introductory get-to-know-you game, the participants’ attention was drawn to their name tags. Each name tag also included a picture of a fruit. And here we go. Suddenly, there were 3 teams: the Apple team, the Pear team and the Cherry team. All teams had to win some ingredients for a traditional Czech meal in the prepared games and activities. The more they recognized, the more ingredients they got. Since we wanted everybody to learn about Czech food through all their senses, we prepared 3 activities: tasting, sniffing and “touching” (we’re still speaking about food ). Touch me! Is it a toothpaste? Classroom 1 was equipped with a mysterious box in which we put a carrot, an apple, a radish, a turnip cabbage, Hašlerka and Jesenka (which everybody thought was toothpaste or shoe polish). Unfortunately, the radish, too, became hard to recognize after several rounds, as it shrank a bit. Sniff me and pepper sneezing Activity in classroom 2 was more difficult: sniffing with covered eyes. Thanks to this activity our students could have recognized other Czech “products” through another sense. Under their noses we put Olomoucké syrečky, pepper, cinnamon, sauerkraut, Becherovka and coffee. Taste me! Beer? Huh, I want more! Tasting was prepared through the door of the next classroom. Students tasted hermelín, pickled cucumbers, beer, Kofola, Pribináček and chocolate. The most entertaining part was watching people try to put the spoon in their mouths, but everyone managed to do it in the end. The greatest success was beer, of course. Some students even asked for more. On the other hand, hardly anyone recognized Pribináček. Everybody thought it was yoghurt, cream, cottage cheese or pudding. Only one student knew the correct answer but we leniently accepted all the names mentioned earlier. Watch out for fake waiters Finally, from the ingredients students received during the games, they were supposed to make recipes and match them with photos. After all the teams put their recipes together, we moved to the second part of the Czech Night. Each Czech Night is inseparably connected with a Czech movie. But how to link food and movie? The choice was easy. We had picked a movie about a phantom of Czech restaurants and played Vrchní, prchni. A must-see! Tasting, sniffing and handing so much food had made us very hungry, so we split the food that was left, drank a few shots of Becherovka and headed to Metro Music Bar where everybody ordered what he or she wanted. It was a nice evening, wasnt it? Come and join us next time! You are very welcome! >> More pictures The post Czech Food Night appeared first on Czech for Foreigners.
